ALMUNECAR, COSTA DEL SOL, SPAIN.
Almunecar is built on a promontory between the two river estuaries of the Rio Verde and Rio Seco. Over the years the river deltas silted up and the shorefront now comprises the two main beaches of Playa Puerta del Mar and the Playa San Cristobal.
The two beaches are broken by abrupt cliffs that support the Arab citadel and three large rocks leading out to sea called Penones. The largest El Penon del Santo was once an ancient shrine and today it is home to a huge cross that is illuminated in the evening.
Almunecar is a warren of steep winding streets that lead from the central square called the Plaza de La Constitucion towards the castle which is the highest and old quarter of town called the Barrio San Miguel.
Worth a visit is the Museo Arqueologico which is home to many Roman and Phoenician artefacts. Just on the outskirts of the old town remains of a Roman and Phoenician cemetary can be found where over 200 tombs have been excavated.
There are many fine restaurants situated around the Plaza de la Constitucion with a variety to suit all tastes.
Almunecar has good bus links to Nerja, Malaga and Almeria with a daily service to Jaen, Sevilla and Granada.

Málaga is the major coastal city of Andalucia and is a lively, historic and very Spanish city. Occupied by the moors until the mid 15th century it became one of the foremost trading centres in the Iberian peninsula. Today Málaga airport is the gateway to the Costa del Sol.
The historic city centre, with the Mediterranean as its backdrop, has wide leafy boulevards, beautiful gardens and some impressive monuments including the magnificent cathedral. The nearby castle which is now a parador (state hotel) with superb panoramic views is also well worth a visit. Pablo Picasso was born in Málaga and there are several galleries showing his work. Málaga’s main theatre the “Teatro Cervantes” is also popular. The 9 day Feria de Málaga in mid August is the biggest and most spectacular summer fair in Andalucia and musicians, dancers, horses and riders in their finery take over the city centre.
Not only is Málaga a cultural centre but it is also a great place to eat out. Málaga’s bars and restaurants stay open very late and this is when the city really comes alive. The happy hour does not start until midnight in some bars! Try the tapas, small portions of different dishes in an Andalusian tradition and the local Málaga wine and soak up the atmosphere in this vibrant city.

There is an old town which still retains its natural charm with whitewashed houses and narrow cobbled streets. The whole resort has a backdrop of the magnificant Sierra Blanca mountains.
One of the most famous landmarks in Marbella is without doubt the famous marina area of Puerto Banus where the rich and famous moor their million pound water palaces. You can enjoy a drink at one of the marina bars and people watch although beware at a price as these bars charge a high premium for their wonderful location.
The whole resort of Marbella enjoys perhaps some of the finest of Costa del Sol's hotels although recently a number of Costa del Sol apartments have become popular with the middle market clients.
There are a number of smaller beaches in the resort although these are often hard to find as they are not signposted which makes the larger main beach quite crowded in high season.
Shopping in Marbella is made up of classy chic boutiques although you can find some delightful smaller shops in the winding streets of the old town.

NERJA, COSTA DEL SOL, SPAIN.
Nerja is situated on the eastern end of the Costa del Sol approx 32 miles from Malaga. For many years Nerja escaped the mass tourism markets that found their way to the rest of the coast and was predomimently a resort with villas and apartments and a large ex-pat community. This changed slightly with the inclusion of new hotels that sprung up on the undeveloped coastline bordering the town. Despite this the resort still has a charm all of its own with narrow side streets and the famous "Balcon de Europa" and main square with the delightful church of the Iglesia del Salvador.
Nerja boasts 5 beaches in total although perhaps the best is the Burriana Beach where you can sample some of the best seafood beach restaurants serving Paella on the coast. You can still watch the fishermen landing their catches whilst you drink your sangria.
Shopping is centred around the narrow streets of the town where you will find a variety of chic boutiques.
Eating out here is varied and you will find a wide choice of food to suit all tastes including local dishes.
Excursions from Nerja include the famous Caves of Nerja which were found by a group of local boys back in 1957 and is home to the world's largest known stalactite at 63metres long.
The little village of Frigiliana which is nestled in the hills high above Nerja is perhaps one of the most picturesque of the whitewashed villages on the Costa del Sol and has won many awards.
Both Nerja and Frigiliana have very steep hills and may not be suitable for us less mobile guests. Most suited to couples or our silver surfer guests although there are a few clubs to keep the younger set occupied.

PUERTO BANUS, COSTA DEL SOL, SPAIN
Puerto Banus is the most fashionable resort in Southern Spain. The busy Marina is home to some of the most improssive yachts in the World. Puerto Banus is the ideal place to relax and admire the yachts whilst have a drink or something to eat on the waterfront.
As with any resort associated with the rich and famous, Puerto Banus has more than it's fair share of pubs, clubs, restaurants, world-class shopping and casino facilities. Designer names can be found on all the main streets, but if you prefer to browse smaller, more traditional Spanish shops and boutiques then there are plenty of these too.
Notably the premier Spanish department store El Corte Ingles with it's five stories, and the Marina Banus Shopping Centre are two of the most popular locations that shoppers head for.
Alternatively, a visit to the weekly market held in the bullring each Saturday morning is a great way to buy both local products and holiday souvenirs!
Puerto Banus nightlife is as good as it gets and holds a world-class reputation. It can carry on until dawn if you want it to, or if you prefer something a bit more sedate then you can settle for a quiet drink and tapa in any one of the countless local bars spread throughout the town. If you do get the urge to have a taste of Tinsel Town, there are numerous cocktail and wine bars spread around the Marina and seafront areas, known as the Muelle Rivera - incidentally these are great areas for doing a bit of 'star spotting'!
There are several Golf Clubs in Puerto Banus, including La Quinta, Los Naranjos, Las Brisas and Aloha or why not visit the 1998 Ryder Cup Course of Valderrama! Tennis courts are available at Hotel PYR and there is also the Los Granados Tennis Club in Puerto Banus with three tennis courts and two paddle tennis courts. Puerto Banus also boast the only multi cinema complex in the Costa del Sol.
As with Marbella, Puerto Banus enjoys it's own micro-climate and boasts over 300 days of sunshine each year, with a year round average temperature of 19 degrees
Puerto Banus is definately the place "to see and be seen".

Eating out in the resort is certainly cosmopolitan with everything from fast food outlets to fine seafood restaurants.
